I know I have opposed this even from the first minute I've heard the news of Audi wanting Alfa. But I'm sick of delays, changes of plans and I'm sick of Marchionne's shenanigans. !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!

Kinja'd!!!

Just sell the damn thing to Audi, and use the money to kickstart Lancia's revival, it's the fair thing to do for Alfa, Lancia and for Italian workers, as Audi did a great job for Lamborghini, and could do the same for Alfa.

I said the same thing when I've heard the news, but if you use your brain and not your heart, for once, selling the brand, is the right thing to do. As Audi will likely buy manufacturing bases in Italy, and will keep Alfa's engineers, designers and some of the execs.

It would be VAG not Audi.

I want RWD Alfas. On the street. I want them to compete with BMW and Audi.

Is Audi willing to provide?

VAG would integrate into it's sporty division, along with Audi, Lamborghini and Ducati.

No, all Alfa's would be based on the MQB platform and the Up!

Not sure about RWD, as VAG brands don't really do RWD, but Piech plan was to turn Audi into a sporty yet elegant brand, to send it against Mercedes, Lexus, Volvo and Cadillac, and Alfa a sporty brand, to send it against BMW, Infiniti or Jaguar. They would probably share quattro, with Alfa.

Fine by me, much better than FIAT wasting Chrysler money on Alfa.

Trolly remark aside, I honestly could care less if Alfa comes back to the US. If that's what FIAT wants to do fine. Just don't use all of Chrysler's hard earned profits to do it. I would much rather see Chrysler move up market than see Alfa come back to the US. I also happen to think this would be a better business decision. Anyway I am rooting for the UAW. Who would have thunk it?

No RWD? Then they should not touch it.

Look, Alfa has one thing, and one thing only: their heritage of sports and sporty cars. All the best were RWD. Even though they did well with FWD, when Fiat told them to, it's just not the same. Oh by all means do the A,B and C segments (currently the Mito and the Giulietta) as FWD/AWD, but whatever replaces the 159, should be RWD by design, and then of course add an AWD variation to please the masses. Just as Merc and BMW do it.

Same with the Coupé based on that.

The 4C and the pairing of the next Spider with the MX-5 shows Alfa knows this is the right direction.

If Audi takes over, Alfa might turn around, and have excellent offerings in the B and C segment, as well as good SUVs, both compact and mid size. And of course very competent Quattro executive saloons, that people now looking at Volvo might choose instead. And some Quattro sports cars. If this was Lancia we were talking about, i wouldn't bat an eyelid over this prospect, I would even consider it a good plan.

But for Alfa, this just won't do.

As long as they stay RWD. Porsche's exempt from VAG AWD Syndrome, so I would have hope.

Zero chance in hell. There is literally no room in the VAG.

Audi's always had its foot in the lower end of premium market by offering FWD cars, many of which directly compete with Alfa Romeo's products, and with VW continuing to produce the CC and the Phaeton, there's not even a room for a semi-luxury brand. You can say they can make Alfa a more sporting brand, but that's what Seat's supposed to be and look how that's going. Seat's bleeding money left and right and most of its sales come from its native market. The same is true for Alfa Romeo. There's already infighting among VAG's luxury brands over overlapping models. I doubt VAG will want to add to that mess.

Unless VAG intends to turn Alfa into a super-niche brand, I don't see it.

"trolly remark

Trolly remark aside.

exactly the same trolly remark"

Chrysler won't be able to move upmarket. They don't have the international presence. Even Cadillac has trouble to move upmarket, and they have a history. Chrysler's history as a luxury mark is dead, buried and the atrocious 300C was the bulldozer that built a McDrive above the deceased remains. Nobody cares. And Fiat already has an upmarket brand. It's called Maserati. Say Chrysler. Now say Maserati. That should be enough reason to prefer a Maserati over a Chrysler.

There is no higher cause for Chrysler money to go to than the resurrection of Alfa. If Alfa doesn't survive, the world will be out of Saab, Lancia and Alfa Romeo. That would be a sad day indeed for enthusiasts.

Furthermore, it would be nice if Chrysler showed some humility. They were saved by Fiat. Now they're doing fine and they let Fiat suck it. Without realizing that a good running Fiat is beneficial for both companies. They have money they don't use except for piggybanking. Sergio Marchionne let them build the loss giving SRT Viper to boost morale and now they're giving him the cold shoulder.
